Ten minutes of training, then a whole city

A city at handlebar height. Pick the ride, not the walk.

What the training lap is really like, which old towns have cobbles that fight back, what an hour costs against three, and whether the evening ride earns its premium. Reviews of the Segway tours you can book today.

Riders on Segways in the half-timbered lanes of Petite France, Strasbourg
Where people ride

Six cities that suit a Segway, whether they planned to or not.

Flat old quarters, car-free riverbanks and park loops with nothing coming the other way. Six cities where the ride is the sightseeing, and the best of each.

Spain

Spain runs more Segway tours than anywhere, in three quite different shapes.

A quarter of the rides on this site start in Spain, and they split cleanly: a seafront city, a park city and a run of Andalusian old towns. Three days out, three prices.

Most booked

The Segway rides more travellers take than any others.

City rides

★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 1,924 riders on the most booked city ride

Two hours, one guide, and the whole centre of a strange city in your head by lunch. It is the shape most Segway tours take, and these three do it better than the rest.

Spain

Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia

2h· flat and paved· cheapest on the site

The cheapest city rides on the site and the most of them. Barcelona runs the seafront and the Gothic quarter, Madrid is park and palace, Valencia is riverbed park the whole way.

The USA

Wide paths, long sightlines

1.5-2h· helmets standard· small groups

Nashville, Chicago, San Diego and Washington built the kind of waterfront path a Segway was designed for. Groups are small, helmets are compulsory and the guide keeps a radio in your ear.

Central Europe

Two banks and a castle hill

1.5-3h· some climbing· two riverbanks

Budapest, Prague and Krakow put the sights on both sides of a river and a hill in the middle. The machine takes the climb without complaint, which is the whole argument for it.

The USA

American Segway tours are wide, flat and usually beside water.

Washington has the Mall, Savannah has the squares, Myrtle Beach and Fort Lauderdale have boardwalk. Long sightlines, low traffic and paths built for wheels: the easiest riding anywhere on this site.

Old towns

Cobbles are the one surface that argues back.

Medieval lanes are exactly what you came to see and exactly what the machine finds hardest. The rides below either pick the smooth line through them or hold the speed low enough that it stops mattering. Krakow, Prague, Seville and Valencia all do it well.

Every old town ride →
Kinds of city ride

Seafront, old town or park loop: the three city rides worth comparing.

Most cities offer all three and price them differently. The seafront run is the easy one, the old town is the interesting one, and the park loop is the one to book when somebody in the group has never ridden.

What it costs

What an hour on a Segway actually costs.

Every ride on the site, grouped by price. The gap between a taster lap and a private guided morning is wider than most people expect.

Under $50

Taster laps, one-hour park loops and the short city rides out of Barcelona, Budapest and Seville.

$50 to $150

The standard two-hour guided city ride, plus the evening runs and the beach boardwalks.

$150 and up

Private guides, half-day off-road routes and the rides that finish somewhere you could not have walked to.

Before you book

Can you ride one? Almost certainly. Here is what the guide checks first.

Nearly every tour opens with a training lap in a quiet square, ten minutes or so, and nobody leaves it until the guide is happy. Expect a minimum age somewhere between twelve and sixteen depending on the city, a weight range at both ends, closed shoes and a helmet that stays on. If any of that worries you, a taster ride is the cheap way to find out.

Only on two wheels

Three rides that only make sense on a Segway.

A walking tour cannot reach them and a coach cannot stop in them. These are the routes the machine was built for.

Red dirt

The base of Uluru

Ten kilometres of track around the rock on fat off-road tyres, starting early enough that the flies and the heat are still somebody else’s problem. Walking the same loop takes most of a day and the shuttle stops nowhere useful in between. This is the one route where the machine does something boots genuinely cannot.

Water on one side

The foreshore run

Perth, Budapest, Lyon and Strasbourg all laid kilometres of flat car-free path along the water. Segway tours are what those paths turned out to be for: one uninterrupted line, no junctions to stop at, and the whole skyline sitting on your left the entire way.

Small islands

A lap of somewhere you can see the edge of

Rottnest, Hilton Head, Old San Juan. Islands small enough to circle in an afternoon and awkward enough that hiring a car is pointless. The ring road is the route, the beaches are the stops, and you are back at the ferry with time to spare.
